71037 Series 24’s packaging is a first for LEGO Collectible Minifigures

The packaging for LEGO Collectible Minifigures 71037 Series 24 marks a first for the blind-bagged theme – but not in the way many of us were fearing.

The LEGO Group has previously promised to switch from plastic packaging to more eco-friendly cardboard for its Collectible Minifigures, which will make identifying the blind-packaged characters completely impossible. In their plastic bags, it’s possible to feel out particular minifigures through specific elements – but when the cardboard comes, that method will be redundant, and you’ll truly be buying blind.

While that change will happen in 2023, it won’t be with 71037 Series 24, which will come packaged in the theme’s usual plastic bags. In fact, according to the LEGO Group, the first series in the new cardboard packaging won’t arrive until at least September, which – based on the current release pattern of Collectible Minifigures – will likely mark the debut of the third and final series for 2023.

That should be some relief to the community of minifigure collectors who don’t have the means to buy an entire box, which – beyond hoping your local toy store or LEGO Store has pre-sorted them, or turning to the secondary market – is currently the only other way to guarantee getting a full set of characters from any given series.

But even within its traditional packaging, 71037 Series 24 does represent a first for the Collectible Minifigures theme, and that’s through the colour selected for its bags. We’ve had multiple shades of blue, orange, yellow and green across the dozens of series released since 2010, alongside black, red, white, silver and gold bags – but we’ve never had pink.

Perhaps better described as magenta, the packaging for 71037 Series 24 introduces a brand new hue for the Collectible Minifigures series, and that’s quite the feat for a theme approaching 13 years old. It also mirrors one of its minifigures in the process, as the latest series includes a new colour for the Classic Space astronaut, seen here in brown for the first time. Teal next, anyone? (That goes for both the packaging and the astronaut.)

71037 Series 24 launches January 1, priced at £3.49 / $4.99 / €3.99 per bag. Check out more images of all 12 brand new characters here.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
