LEGO CITY 60292 Town Center review

Bringing to life a bustling LEGO community, 60292 Town Center comes in as the flagship set of the latest LEGO CITY wave – and acts as a showcase for all that the revamped road plates have to offer budding town planners.

60292 Town Center packs in plenty of playability with a car wash, electric charging point, a pizzeria and a dojo – all complemented by a small park, a recycling centre and a great selection of minifigures.

This set also incorporates the new modular system of road plates, which are a great way of connecting multiple sets and bringing life to your sprawling city. But when presented altogether, is it really the sum of its parts?

— Build —

60292 Town Center includes five instruction booklets to lead you through the build process, starting with a selection of vehicles, minifigures, the electric charging point and connecting the road plates. The car is a neat little build that accommodates a single minifigure and includes a charging connection on the front of the vehicle for when the battery charge is getting a little low. These initial bags also include a blue mountain bike for the police officer and a red motorbike for the firefighter.

Next is the build of the car wash, which is a spacious building complete with rolling bristles that are slightly sprung and move when you push the car through. The colour scheme and branding of the car wash is the familiar green, white and red combination that you would expect for Octan, and it also includes some nice detail such as water falling from above, instructions on how to use the car wash and lighting.

You’ll then move on to the recycling truck and its driver Shirley Keeper, one of the two minifigures in this set who has been given a name. The truck is a six-wheeled flatbed that includes a lifting arm to lift the recycling bins on to the back (Shirley wields the remote control to operate the arm). The finished truck looks great and there’s an interesting part usage to create the grille on the front of the truck.

The next part of the build creates the recycling centre and a small park. The recycling bins include stickers to distinguish between paper or glass, and both include a ring on the top so that they can be lifted on to the back of the truck. The small park includes a bench and a small ride-on that rocks back and forth. The ride-on is clearly built to accommodate the baby minifigure and will not fit other minifigures.

Finally, there’s the build of the pizzeria and dojo, which is a real highlight of 60292 Town Center. The completed building looks great, complete with signage and a roof terrace that includes planting and a simple but effective cherry tree. The pizzeria is compact, but enough detail is packed in to bring it to life with a fiery pizza oven and a cash register. The dojo is also pretty compact, but squeezes in plenty of kendo equipment and is finished nicely with sand green windows.

Once complete, the different elements are all connected by the road plates, which are configured in a ‘t’ formation to effectively bring the build to life – especially with the playability that the car wash and recycling centre have to offer.

— Characters —

This set includes a wonderful variety of minifigures that enhance the playability of the set. There’s the criminal minifigure who can be pursued by the policeman, complete with helmet and mountain bike. The second minifigure with a name, Madison, has kendo armour printed on her torso, which matches that of her kendo teacher who is a bearded, grey-haired gentleman who also has printed legs.

Shirley Keeper is a very distinctive minifigure with orange hair and a hi-vis vest over her blue overalls, which is printed on both sides of her torso. The pizzeria chef is a familiar depiction complete with chef’s hat and a paddle for retrieving pizzas from the hot oven.

The female firefighter minifigure comes complete with a helmet and she is on hand to tackle the small fire that has broken out at the side of the pizzeria. The mother and baby minifigures enhance the playability of the park, and work well with each other thanks to the included baby carrier.

And finally, there’s the inclusion of a partially-sighted or blind minifigure for the first time in any LEGO set. The male minifigure wear darks glasses and is combined with the new dog element and harness.

This set is good value for the price tag given the variety of buildings, vehicles and minifigures in a single set. Then there’s also the inclusion of the LEGO Group’s new road plates, which are an excellent way of connecting different models. Three 16×16 road plates are included in this set as well as two 8×16 road plates, one of which is printed with a pedestrian crossing.

— Summary —

60292 Town Center is a great set that offers lots of playability within the scope of its various assemblies, as well as the ability to integrate easily with other sets using the new road plates. The selection of minifigures offers lots of options for creative play and there’s also enough vehicles to make this set feel like a busy city.
