Latest LEGO Ideas 90th anniversary contest calls for original Classic Space builds

The third LEGO Ideas 90th anniversary contest is now live, and focuses on Classic Space – but you won’t be building in microscale this time.

The LEGO Ideas team has pivoted away from the format of its first two contests – which asked for microscale recreations of your favourite set, and then any Classic Castle set – to focus on original builds for its Classic Space competition. It’s the third of five total contests for the company’s 90th anniversary, and once again there’s an incredible bundle of prizes available.

To be in with a chance of winning this round, you’ll need to break out the bricks to put together an original creation anchored around Classic Space. That means taking inspiration from the colour schemes, design language and sets from the ‘70s and ‘80s, but not specifically recreating an official model in a different scale, as per the previous two contests.

Your submission also can’t be related to any intellectual properties or real-world space themes, such as NASA. You’ll find that and all the other rules – including the new restriction on image dimensions, which is in place for this and all future contests – over on the competition page. The submission period for this contest is open for two weeks, until July 21.

If you secure first place in this or any other LEGO Ideas 90th anniversary contest, you’ll take home all five sets designed to celebrate the LEGO Group’s birthday: 10305 Lion Knights’ Castle, 10497 Galaxy Explorer, 11021 90 Years of Play, 30510 90 Years of Cars and 40567 Forest Hideout. The winners of all five contests will be announced on August 10 – or 90 years to the day since the LEGO Group was founded.

The second of the five contests, which involves redesigning a Classic Castle set in microscale, is still open for entries. The first contest closed earlier today, with almost 1,000 entries vying for a shot at the grand prize.

Two more contests will follow weekly throughout July, and while their exact format is difficult to predict now we’re moving away from microscale, their subjects will presumably be Pirates and BIONICLE – the other two finalists in last year’s 90th anniversary poll, alongside Classic Castle and Classic Space.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
