LEGO Monkie Kid 80041 Mei’s Dragon Jet review

LEGO Monkie Kid 80041 Mei’s Dragon Jet is the most affordable vehicle for Mei yet, but being an add-on to another model limits its potential.

Following Mei’s recent embrace of the Samadhi Fire in the last chapter of LEGO Monkie Kid, the character is back in the sky with another draconic jet in her least expensive build yet. However, it’s not all good news as the set’s main feature undermines most of the creation, unless you buy another set for the same price.

80041 Mei’s Dragon Jet may be worthwhile to those who want to go the extra mile with LEGO Monkie Kid in 2023 but otherwise, this model is unlikely to be for everyone.

— Where to buy LEGO Monkie Kid 80041 Mei’s Dragon Jet

LEGO Monkie Kid isn’t as frequently available in physical stores as it once was, and is otherwise exclusive to LEGO.com. You won’t need to look to any other retailer for 80041 Mei’s Dragon Jet, as the set is readily available (and not massively expensive) at LEGO.com.

— LEGO Monkie Kid 80041 Mei’s Dragon Jet build —

Like 80040 Monkie Kid’s Combi Mech, 80041 Mei’s Dragon Jet is made up of three builds, one being the jet and the others being a small cannon and ammunition storage. In case it wasn’t clear by the name, the jet is the star of the show in this set and at first glance, it has a sleek, angular shape with the usual mix of green, white and blue. However, there isn’t much else to this build that you can’t already see on the front of the box.

With room for one minifigure, stud shooters, moving wings and an ejecting, smaller aircraft, 80041 Mei’s Dragon Jet has a few functions that will inspire some play, but it’s not quite as enjoyable to interact with as its partner model, 80040 Monkie Kid’s Combi Mech. The build just doesn’t change as much as other LEGO Monkie Kid entries, and its transformation is useful only when attaching to that other model, which requires an additional purchase.

When attached to 80040 Monkie Kid’s Combi Mech, it’s an attractive addition to a great set, though it’s simply not worth another £17.99 / $19.99 / €19.99 unless you like the base build of 80041 Mei’s Dragon Jet too. Interestingly, the model that doesn’t have ‘combi’ in the name is the one with a heavy reliance on its combining feature, while 80040 Monkie Kid’s Combi Mech can stand on its own without much of an issue. One advantage 80041 Mei’s Dragon Jet has on 80040 Monkie Kid’s Combi Mech is the addition of the Ink General minifigure, upping the selection with a third character. However, that comes with a lower piece count and smaller enemy build too. The two Ink Demon minifigures are decent with detailed printing, and serve their purpose of being cannon fodder for Mei’s jet.

Unlike the armoured Monkie Kid minifigure in 80040 Monkie Kid’s Combi Mech, Mei’s minifigure has been featured in four other sets in the theme so it’s not entirely uncommon. It’s still a great minifigure with fantastic detailing, but there’s a chance you might already have this minifigure unfortunately.

— LEGO Monkie Kid 80041 Mei’s Dragon Jet price —

At £17.99 / $19.99 / €19.99, the volume of everything included in 80041 Mei’s Dragon Jet is just enough to feel right at this price. Unfortunately, even with an additional minifigure, its value in terms of play is a lot more limited than that of 80040 Monkie Kid’s Combi Mech. Since these two combine and rely on each other for their main feature, it only feels right to compare them and 80041 Mei’s Dragon Jet isn’t quite at the same level as the other model when it comes to value.

As long as you like the jet and have been looking for a Mei vehicle, you won’t be too disappointed with 80041 Mei’s Dragon Jet in terms of value, but to realise its true potential, you’ll have to spend another £17.99 / $19.99 / €19.99.

— LEGO Monkie Kid 80041 Mei’s Dragon Jet pros and cons —

Despite being the most accessible Mei vehicle in LEGO Monkie Kid yet, 80041 Mei’s Dragon Jet just isn’t as impressive as the other builds in the 2023 wave. This is thanks in part to its lacklustre features, aside from its main function that requires another set at the same price. The design is fine but it feels as if the model was designed to be an add-on to 80040 Monkie Kid’s Combi Mech first, and a full set second.

A third minifigure isn’t enough to save this model, and unless you’ve been looking for a vehicle for Mei, have already purchased 80040 Monkie Kid’s Combi Mech or genuinely love the sleek design, there’s not enough to recommend 80041 Mei’s Dragon Jet – especially compared to its companion model or the rest of the 2023 LEGO Monkie Kid range.
