LEGO Star Wars Andor 75338 Ambush on Ferrix review

75338 Ambush on Ferrix is a great example of the best of LEGO Star Wars design, except for the fact it is locked behind a ridiculous price tag.

Coming as the first tie-in LEGO Star Wars set for Disney+ show Andor, 75338 Ambush on Ferrix is based around Rebel intelligence officer Cassian Andor’s journey towards the characters and story we see played out in Rogue One.

Coming into this set before having seen the show means we cannot talk too confidently around the relevance and authenticity of 75338 Ambush on Ferrix – is this ship pivotal to the show’s first season, or perhaps involved in a climactic action scene or two, or is it sat in the background in a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it cameo? Are the proportions of the LEGO model way off, or remarkably true to the ship both inside and out?

In any eventuality, what we do know now and will be sure remains the same come August, when we have all the above questions answered, is that 75338 Ambush on Ferrix is a neat little LEGO set with a ridiculous price tag.

There are some LEGO Star Wars sets that unfortunately are very difficult to separate from their price tag, and 75338 Ambush on Ferrix is very much one such set. The size of the box alone throws up caution, because for £69.99, it feels far too small and light. There may be six sets of numbered bags but there aren’t enough pieces to really justify that split, nor have you forget how much you forked out for this.

It’s a shame because focusing purely on the LEGO set, 75338 Ambush on Ferrix is certainly intriguing, carrying touches of Imperialistic design across its exterior and interior and very much sitting as a mid-sized transport, the likes of which are usually very collectible and great for army building, regardless of how much screen time they accrue.

There are shades of sets like 75311 Imperial Armored Marauder, 75046 Coruscant Police Gunship and even 75178 Jakku Quadjumper to be found in 75338 Ambush on Ferrix and for those similarities it’s a pleasure to put together and play with. What it may resemble in structure or design from other LEGO sets and Star Wars ships, though, 75338 Ambush on Ferrix is also very much its own creation, and all the more interesting for that too.

The proportions of the main grey ship are where it most immediately stands apart, almost resembling in that tall, upright body a people-carrier on the school run with wings attached. You half-expect it to be parked anti-socially down your road waiting for the kids from the local school to finish for the day. And much like such a car, while the exterior to the grey ship in 75338 Ambush on Ferrix may take some adjusting to, the interior is where it really shines, quite simply for how deceptively big it is.

There’s space inside for as many as five minifigures to sit (arguably more if you don’t want to follow the seating plan), while that space within is nicely offset with enough detail and colour to be intricate to build – but not too busy or overcomplicated to enjoy once complete.

That interior is cocooned very nicely by a bodywork design that works very hard in all light grey to camouflage some smart building techniques, which make for some subtle but highly effective changes in angle and shape across the sides and top. Everything folds open for easy access, and folds back up much more tightly than you would expect those various angles of plates to be able to come together.

In all, both inside and out, the main build to 75338 Ambush on Ferrix is interesting to build and as a final model, with plenty of play potential throughout. It’s good enough too that even without the context of the show to hand, it draws you in and gets you thinking about Star Wars and playing with it, as the best LEGO Star Wars sets always do.

The accompanying speeder bike is also far more detailed than you may initially expect, even if like every LEGO Star Wars speeder bike before it, it’s likely way too large in proportions, so as to seat the two minifigures on it.

Combined, the two models make for a LEGO Star Wars set both familiar to what has come before and unique to the source material they are based on. With more detail packed into each model than their sizes would otherwise suggest, the LEGO experience to 75338 Ambush on Ferrix more than delivers. It’s all the more unfortunate that there’s a significant and restrictive price tag attached to such creations.

Included in 75338 Ambush on Ferrix are three exclusive minifigures for Cassian Andor, Luthen Rael and Syril Karn. While little is known about the latter two characters, or for that matter where Andor is as a character too, their designs are all authentic and true to what we have seen of the three in trailers and stills released so far from the upcoming Andor show.

Indeed, the criticism to be had with 75338 Ambush on Ferrix isn’t in the selection of minifigures here, but more so the number that are included, particularly for the price of the set. Perhaps had we received two more minifigures – maybe another blue-suited guard alongside Syril Karn, and either a second-generation Clone Trooper or a Stormtrooper – then that price tag wouldn’t feel so bad. As it is, we’ve just built a five-seater transport at great cost and there’s only the one pilot included…

75338 Ambush on Ferrix is a neat little set that has been carefully and creatively designed, complete with a nice side-build and a more-than-decent trio of new and exclusive minifigures. Yet, for everything that is great, the price of £69.99 / $69.99 / €79.99 is so very wide of the mark that it’s not even insulting – it’s just disappointing that it’s where we are in 2022.

75338 Ambush on Ferrix is fantastic and serves as a great first taste of what’s to come in the Disney+ show Andor, and it also serves as a strong example of the attention and expertise that the LEGO Star Wars team apply to every set that they create.

But, at the very high price it comes in at, this is not a set that as many of us will experience first-hand as could otherwise have – it is a restrictive, prohibitive price for such a product and we cannot recommend you consider picking this up until at least £20 is knocked off in a sale.
