LEGO’s new Star Wars experiment for May the 4th is clearly paying off

The LEGO Star Wars team has tried something new for this year’s May the 4th launches – and it looks like it’s already paying dividends for the theme.

Over the past couple of years, the LEGO Star Wars theme has established a solid formula for its new sets: a battle pack, Microfighter and larger set in January; new additions to the LEGO Star Wars Helmet Collection and Diorama Collection in spring; an Ultimate Collector Series set in May; and so on. But for this year’s May the 4th releases, the LEGO Group has tried something different.

We’re talking specifically about 75356 Executor Super Star Destroyer, a midi-scale grey wedge inspired by the response to 2020’s 77904 Nebulon-B Frigate. Coming in at £59.99 / $69.99 / €69.99 for 630 pieces, the display model sits outside the established parameters for the LEGO Star Wars theme as it stands today, pushing the envelope for what this range can offer.

The good news for the LEGO Group is that it’s clearly working, because – at the time of writing – 75356 Executor Super Star Destroyer is sold out in the US, and on back order in the UK and Europe. Contrast that to the rest of this year’s May the 4th releases, and it paints a favourable picture for more midi-scale display ships going forward.

In the UK and Europe, the Star Destroyer is the only brand new release on back order: 75346 Pirate Snub Fighter, 75348 Mandalorian Fang Fighter vs. TIE Interceptor, 75352 Emperor’s Throne Room Diorama, 75353 Endor Speeder Chase Diorama, 75355 X-wing Starfighter and 40623 Battle of Endor Heroes are all still available to order with immediate delivery.

In the US, it’s almost the same story – except 75348 Mandalorian Fang Fighter vs. TIE Interceptor is also temporarily out of stock across the pond. While there’s always the possibility that the LEGO Group has simply produced fewer copies of 75356 Executor Super Star Destroyer (misjudging demand), from our point of view it still looks like the clear winner this May the 4th.

All of this year’s LEGO Star Wars May the 4th deals are live now, including 40591 Death Star II (free with purchases above £130 / $150 / €150), 5007840 Return of the Jedi 40th Collectible (free with purchases above £80 / $85 / €85) and 30654 X-wing Starfighter (free with purchases above £35 / $40 / €40).

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
