LEGO Star Wars sets could benefit from LEGO Avatar design

LEGO Avatar clearly incorporated display into the design process of the second wave – should other LEGO themes do the same?

All five LEGO Avatar sets from the upcoming wave in January 2023, related to the sequel film Avatar: The Way of Water, aren’t simply made up of creatures and machines, like much of the first wave of sets from the theme are. In addition to these, there are also brick-built elements from Pandora, with colourful creatures and plants to bring the theme to life.

Both ships and creatures can be attached to these elements for a more dynamic display, lifting them off surfaces to create the illusion of flight. While the world of Avatar certainly lends itself to this idea, it’s not the only theme that this could prove useful for.

In the same way that Pandora is a stunning location to bring to life, Star Wars has plenty of locations that would lend themselves well to the same treatment, as well as ships that could benefit from a sturdy stand to support them. While there are some clever ways to display LEGO Star Wars builds, having a brick-built element that blends well with the ship would be a welcome addition.

We’re thinking sandy dunes from Tatooine to support 75341 Luke Skywalker’s Landspeeder instead of the plain black legs, metal-looking elements from Hangar 3-5 to go with 75325 The Mandalorian’s N-1 Starfighter, or watery marshes from Dagobah for 75301 Luke Skywalker’s X-Wing Fighter.

While the LEGO Group naturally can’t retroactively include these elements for past sets, we can hope that the ideas of the LEGO Avatar designers can rub off on the designers from other themes.

I write about all the very best fandoms – and that means LEGO, of course. Spending so much time looking at and talking about LEGO sets is dangerous for my bank balance, but the LEGO shelves are thriving. You win some, you lose some.
