Five of the best retiring LEGO sets to get with double VIP points

The upcoming Double VIP Points period (and the spectre of LEGO retirement) means now is a great time to get a few LEGO sets.

2022 is rapidly drawing to a close – which means 2023’s LEGO sets are very nearly here. Of course, that also means older LEGO sets have to make way for them – and December 2022 has a long list of retiring sets to say goodbye to.

As such, the next few weeks represent your last chance to add them to your collection. And with a Double VIP Points promotion launching tomorrow – which lets you earn double the usual cashback on your orders – now is an even better time to buy.

That’s why we’ve rounded up some of the best retiring LEGO sets to grab in this period. Read on for our highlights of 2022’s retiring LEGO products:

5 – 41949 Bag Tags Mega Pack – Messaging

Theme: DOTS Price: £24.99 / $29.99 / €29.99 Pieces: 228 Available: Now

LEGO DOTS takes customisation beyond the toy box and into our everyday lives, with a variety of bracelets, picture frames and even sew-on patches to work with. 41949 Bag Tags Mega Pack – Messaging is ideal if you’re looking to label your valuables in a fun way. With both lettered and unlettered tiles to work with, it’s a particularly versatile DOTS set – and its relatively high price for the DOTS theme makes buying it within this Double VIP Points period a smarter move.

4 – 60299 Stunt Competition

Theme: CITY Price: £17.99 / $29.99 / €29.99 Pieces: 73 Available: Now

The LEGO CITY Stuntz theme is an impressive bit of engineering, and this set is a nice introduction to the concept. It includes a pair of motorcycles, each with its own flywheel to help it travel under its own power. It also features a ramp and a ring of fire to jump through, whose position can be adjusted to raise or lower the difficulty. It’s also relatively inexpensive, which might make hitting any of the current promotional price thresholds a little easier.

3 – 43195 Belle and Rapunzel’s Royal Stables

Theme: Disney Price: £44.99 / $49.99 / €49.99 Pieces: 239 Available: Now

This LEGO Disney entry offers an attractive mix of elements in one set. You’ve got Rapunzel and Belle (the latter in her blue dress, which isn’t as common as you might expect) and their respective horses Maximus and Philippe. Each horse has his own stable area and saddle, and there’s a full suite of accessories with which to groom them and dress them up.

We sense this set has flown under the radar a little – which may explain its availability at this late stage. Still, this gives you a great chance to add a solid set to your LEGO Disney collection.

2 – 71401 Luigi’s Mansion Haunt-and-Seek

Theme: Super Mario Price: £69.99 / $79.99 / €79.99 Pieces: 877 Available: Now

Gamecube spook-em-up Luigi’s Mansion was an unusual choice to launch a games console, but it’s evolved into something of a cult hit since its 2001 release. 71401 Luigi’s Mansion Haunt-and-Seek is a nice tribute to that game, offering several rooms, a few hidden treasures, and an assortment of ghosts to deal with.

Offering a welcome change of pace from the broader LEGO Super Mario range (and a hefty price to capitalise on now) 71401 Luigi’s Mansion Haunt-and-Seek is ideal for long-term fans of the theme. It does work best in conjunction with 71387 Adventures with Luigi, of course, but any Super Mario Starter Course should bring out its best qualities.

1 – 76183 Batcave: The Riddler Face-Off

Theme: DC Comics Super Heroes Price: £59.99 / $79.99 / €69.99 Pieces: 581 Available: Now

Batman is a rather fitting accompaniment to Christmas, thanks to movies like Batman Returns. Of course, he’s also a fitting accompaniment to LEGO collections more broadly – and 76183 Batcave: The Riddler Face-Off is one of the strongest Batman sets currently available.

Taking inspiration from The Batman (starring Robert Pattinson) the set includes most of the movie’s main characters in one place. The Batcave itself is also highly impressive, using a disused railway station to add some visual novelty. With the LEGO DC theme on the rocks at the moment, this set may be the best LEGO Batcave we get for quite some time.

You can see a summary of all these LEGO sets in the table below. All of them are available at LEGO.com at the time of writing, although we predict that will change before too long.
