Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness spoilers confirmed by LEGO rumours?

A new LEGO Marvel rumour may have confirmed two huge spoilers for the upcoming Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

If you’re planning on going into the next Marvel Cinematic Universe film with zero prior knowledge of its events or characters, best look away now: we’re going to be wading deep into potential spoiler territory for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which arrives in cinemas in May.

The LEGO rumour mill has today churned out word of 76218 The Sanctum Sanctorum, which is said to be the LEGO Group’s biggest take yet on Doctor Strange’s New York home. The 2,708-piece model is rumoured to arrive in May or June for $210, but that’s not the interesting part for spoiler-hungry MCU fans.

More intriguing is the mooted minifigure line-up, which is said to include (last chance to avoid spoilers!) three versions of Doctor Strange, Wanda Maximoff, Baron Mordo, Iron Man and Spider-Man. The rumour doesn’t explicitly say the set is based on the Multiverse of Madness, but Wanda’s presence suggests as much – she’s front and centre in the movie’s trailers, after all.

And if that is the case… what are Iron Man and Spider-Man doing there? The webslinger teamed up with Doctor Strange in last year’s Spider-Man: No Way Home, but the universe had forgotten who Tom Holland’s Peter Parker was by the time the credits rolled. Iron Man, meanwhile, is essentially history at this point in the MCU: Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark didn’t survive the events of Avengers: Endgame.

Let’s start with Spider-Man. One rumour currently floating around the web suggests that the wall-crawler making an appearance in the Multiverse of Madness will actually be Tobey Maguire, who reprised his role as the original Peter Parker in No Way Home. That’s according to The DisInsider Show, which states that Andrew Garfield may also return alongside Maguire.

The LEGO rumour may therefore go some way to corroborating that claim, if it pans out as expected (and if it is indeed based on the Multiverse of Madness). It also means 76218 The Sanctum Sanctorum could provide our first opportunity in almost two decades for a Tobey Maguire Spider-Man minifigure, or our only Andrew Garfield Spider-Man minifigure outside 2013’s San Diego Comic-Con exclusive.

As for Iron Man? Well, rumours surrounding that character’s return in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness have actually been doing the rounds since September 2020, when MCU insider Daniel Richtman reported that Tom Cruise could appear as Tony Stark from an alternate Earth.

The latest trailer for the Doctor Strange sequel may contain a glimpse of that version of Iron Man, in the form of the mysterious fiery figure spotted at the 1:34 mark – at least according to theories currently circulating online. Den of Geek forms a pretty solid case for this being Superior Iron Man, a version of the character temporarily (and inadvertently) turned evil by a spell cast by… Wanda.

What’s more, Superior Iron Man’s co-creator Tom Taylor has also pointed out that the armour was ‘designed to glow red/orange when he was angry’. It all seems to line up pretty perfectly, and if the rumoured LEGO minifigures for 76218 The Sanctum Sanctorum are true, they only add further weight to that theory.

It’s unlikely any LEGO Marvel set will genuinely spoil the events of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, however, given 76218 The Sanctum Sanctorum isn’t due to arrive on shelves until May or June. The movie lands in cinemas May 6, which will likely be before the set is revealed (if it exists at all), if only because we can’t see Disney allowing the LEGO Group to spoil major character cameos like these.

Case in point, last year’s Spider-Man: No Way Home sets were so restricted by potential spoilers that only one of the three models was actually explicitly based on the movie – and, of course, Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s Peter Parkers were nowhere in sight.

Bear in mind that these are all still just rumours and theories for now, and that none of this could end up being what plays out on screen (or in LEGO Stores). Keep your expectations tempered in that regard – but hey, if No Way Home delivered to the extent that it did, who knows what Marvel could have up its sleeve for the Multiverse of Madness…
