LEGO Inside Tour 2023 exclusive set revealed

One lucky LEGO fan has unveiled this year’s LEGO Inside Tour set, given away exclusively to those attending the behind-the-scenes trip to LEGO HQ.

The LEGO Inside Tour sets are among the rarest produced by the LEGO Group, given they’re not available to buy anywhere on the open market – and are manufactured in extremely limited numbers. The only ways to get your hands on one are to attend one of the annual LEGO Inside Tours, or turn to the secondary market, where you can expect to pay anywhere up to £7,300 for a single set (if you can even find one).

The embargo on this year’s set has just lifted, and YouTuber Lars Conrad (better known as Der Spielwaren Investor, or The Toy Investor) has now published the first images and video of the exclusive product, numbered 4000040. If you’ve signed up for one of the three remaining Inside Tours for 2023 and don’t want the surprise spoiled, look away now.

This year’s LEGO Inside Tour set is a brick-built replica of a 1940s wooden fire truck, brought to life in 2023 by LEGO Design Master Henrik Andersen. The original toy is on display in the LEGO Group’s internal museum in Billund, which inspired LEGO House Senior Experience Designer Stuart Harris to suggest recreating it for an Inside Tour set.

“That is the one thing that has always been in the assortment from day one up [until] today,” he explains on the back of the box. “It is 90-plus years and it is still a good story.”

As demonstrated by Conrad, the modern fire engine incorporates a functioning ladder, which can be rotated and extended using a hand crank. Once the ladder is at full extension, you can shift the crank to keep it locked in place. The set also features unique printed elements that likely won’t show up anywhere else.

4000040 is limited to just 60 copies, and given the back of the box includes a photo of the LEGO Inside Tour attendees, it feels unlikely that any will pop up on the secondary market. Rare examples of previous years’ sets have popped up on BrickLink from time to time, though, so you never know. You’ll just need deep pockets to grab one for yourself…

The remaining LEGO Inside Tours for 2023 will take place from August 30 to September 1, October 4 to 6 and November 1 to 3. Each experience involves tours of the LEGO House, the LEGO factory, Ole Kirk Kristiansen’s house, the LEGO Ideas House and more, along with three nights at Hotel LEGOLAND and a trip to the employee store.

It’s too late to get on any of the 2023 tours now, but sign-ups for the 2024 tours will likely open later this year. Keep an eye on Brick Fanatics and the LEGO House website for more.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.

It’s only available as part of this year’s Inside Tour unfortunately, but there’s always a chance that some will appear on sites like eBay and BrickLink afterwards – they might just be a bit expensive so set a good amount of money aside.

There will be 300 copies of this set, with 60 hand-numbered copies produced for each of the five Inside Tours. There is a different box sleeve for each of the Inside Tours with their group photo–taken on the first day–printed on the back, hence the ‘out of 60’ on the box. 35 go to the attendees while rest go to LEGO employees who are involved with putting on the show. This is the first year with five Inside Tours. Recent years have had four, with 80 numbered sleeves produced for each.
