LEGO Formula 1 Mercedes set rumoured for 2024

Yet another LEGO Formula 1 car is rumoured to be racing on to shelves in 2024, this time driving straight out of the Mercedes garage.

Next year is already slated to see the launch of two separate Formula 1 cars – one under the Speed Champions banner, and another under LEGO Icons. Both of those would be System-led sets, and are both said to be based on McLaren vehicles, following in the tyre tracks of 2022’s 42141 McLaren Formula 1 Race Car. According to Instagram user brick_clicker, though, they won’t be the only new F1 cars in 2024.

LEGO Technic set 42171 is now rumoured to be a Mercedes Formula 1 car, coming in at 1,642 pieces for $219.99. That’s 210 more elements than its McLaren predecessor for an extra $20, suggesting we’re looking at an ever-so-slightly more involved build – but the safe money is on the new car being to scale with the McLaren for maximum displayability.

What exactly a new LEGO Mercedes F1 car might look like is trickier to determine, as Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff says they’re changing ‘almost every component’ for the 2024 car. The LEGO Group and McLaren developed their 2022 racers in tandem, so if the same thing is happening here, we could be in for a nice surprise come March.

That’s because this set is also believed to be launching on March 1, 2024, at exactly the same time as both LEGO Icons’ 10330 McLaren MP4/8 (complete with an Ayrton Senna minifigure) and LEGO Speed Champions’ 76919 McLaren Formula 1 Race Car. A quick look at the F1 calendar explains the situation, though: the 2024 season starts on March 2, the day after all these sets are rumoured to arrive.

This all suggests 42141 McLaren Formula 1 Race Car has performed well for the LEGO Group, given the company is now shaping up to be leaning heavily into F1 next year. But remember, all three of these new sets are still just rumours for the moment, so treat them lightly.

For a guaranteed LEGO F1 fix right now, check out either 76909 Mercedes-AMG F1 W12 E Performance & Mercedes-AMG Project One or 42141 McLaren Formula 1 Race Car. Both of those sets will still be on shelves if and when the three new F1 models arrive in 2024, as neither is scheduled to retire by the end of 2023.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
