IP themes in LEGO Fortnite are an ‘important focus’

LEGO Kits may have just launched in LEGO Fortnite but it turns out that there’s a long way to go with them possibly including IP-based LEGO Kits.

While they have received some negative reactions from the community, three LEGO Kits have launched for LEGO Fortnite, adding presets, builds and decor items to expand your worlds that cannot be found without purchasing them for V-Bucks.

Speaking to LEGO Fan Media in a recent roundtable, Senior Director of Production for LEGO Fortnite at Epic Games Jesse Merriam revealed what the plans for LEGO Kits could include, recognising that the team has heard the feedback.

“LEGO Kits are our first foray into adding those sorts of cosmetics to further build on top of your world and we made sure that those are a very optional mechanic,” noted Merriam. “The dream is bringing digital LEGO elements to life and so we’ll continue to experiment with how we can pay off that wish fulfilment.”

LEGO Kits may be here to stay, and might not be the last optional mechanic for LEGO Fortnite and there’s the potential for much more variety in the future, including intellectual property-based themes.

“LEGO Fortnite uses the LEGO Group’s full journey as a guide,” Merriam added. “So if you look at the collection of releases, in the physical lines, we want to be something like that. We want to mirror that. So certainly, we’re interested in looking at different IP themes, classic LEGO elements and our original content, which we also want to invest in. But all three of those are important focuses.”

LEGO Kits currently cover two of these three focuses including LEGO Castle and Fortnite’s fictional Durr Burger restaurant chain. The prospect of licensed LEGO Kits is interesting as LEGO styles for various IP-based outfits have already been added to the game including for Marvel and Star Wars.

While it appears that nothing is set in stone at the time of writing, the fan-made LEGO Fortnite Star Destroyer could become a lot more accurate in the future. That’s provided that ‘IP themes’ refers to the likes of LEGO Star Wars, which was specifically named in the question.

LEGO Fortnite’s most recent major update added fishing to the game but something coming on March 26 is going to greatly expand how players build vehicles.

LEGO has been a part of my life ever since I was young. It all started when my brother passed down 7657 AT-ST to me. It’s guided me through my early years, through school and eventually through my degree in journalism. I still have all my collection proudly on display, including my many NINJAGO sets, my favourite of all the LEGO Group’s themes. Outside of Brick Fanatics I am an avid gamer and enjoy a good game of Dungeons & Dragons.
