Nintendo and Illumination announce another Super Mario Bros. movie

After the colossal success of the first Super Mario Bros. Movie, a new film has been officially announced to ‘broaden Mario’s world further’.

It’s Mario Day and that means some Super Mario announcements. Following the LEGO Group’s reveals yesterday including a trio of sets and LEGO Mario Kart, Nintendo has come forward with the main video for the event.

Most of the video focuses on the major announcement for today – a brand new Super Mario Bros. movie. Whether this project could be a sequel is unconfirmed. Its specifically based on the world of Super Mario Bros. That could be referring to the games and not the movie. It’s planned for release on April 3, 2026, in the US. Other territories will receive the film that same month.

Details on the film are scarce at the time of writing but it has been confirmed that they’re considering broadening Mario’s world. Provided this is a sequel, the tease of galaxies and a Luma in the first movie could lead into a storyline tying into Super Mario Galaxy and Rosalina. That’s only speculation, but it’s certainly one path a sequel could take.

Considering that the first Super Mario Bros. Movie has grossed $1 billion, a sequel wouldn’t be surprising. This joins the upcoming Legend of Zelda movie in Nintendo’s slate of cinematic projects.

We didn’t receive any LEGO Super Mario sets based on the first movie though at least the LEGO Group has another chance to capitalise on what seems likely to be another huge success for Nintendo.

LEGO has been a part of my life ever since I was young. It all started when my brother passed down 7657 AT-ST to me. It’s guided me through my early years, through school and eventually through my degree in journalism. I still have all my collection proudly on display, including my many NINJAGO sets, my favourite of all the LEGO Group’s themes. Outside of Brick Fanatics I am an avid gamer and enjoy a good game of Dungeons & Dragons.
