LEGO Sonic the Hedgehog sets visual tour and gallery

Blast through the four new LEGO Sonic the Hedgehog sets as we take a deep dive into the upcoming video game-inspired models.

The LEGO Group and SEGA made a surprise announcement earlier today be pulling back the curtain on four new LEGO Sonic the Hedgehog sets arriving on August 1, 2023. Previous rumours regarding some models had been previously debunked, so the arrival of official builds that expand on the Blue Blur’s world are a welcome treat.

We’ve taken a good look through the details and images of the new LEGO Sonic the Hedgehog sets to provide you with a visual tour and gallery of everything you need to know about the new models.

LEGO Sonic the Hedgehog minifigures

The four upcoming LEGO Sonic the Hedgehog sets feature a number of characters that have only ever appeared in cutscenes in LEGO Dimensions. These include minifigures of Tails and Amy, plus tiny animal figures of Flicky, Clucky, Picky, Pocky and Becky.

In addition there are a total of three Sonic the Hedgehog minifigure variants to pick up, plus a unique Dr. Eggman figure that appears to combine the long legs seen on LEGO Avatar’s Na’vi with a large torso and head piece.

LEGO Sonic the Hedgehog play features

Here’s where some of the new LEGO Sonic the Hedgehog sets really shine. Unlike LEGO Super Mario models that require characters to be picked up and moved around, two of the LEGO Sonic builds feature a special launcher mechanism.

By slamming down on the device, it’s possible to propel Sonic in his speed sphere across the set’s various obstacles, with 76994 Green Hill Zone Loop Challenge offering high-speed thrills that recreate the action seen in the original video games.

LEGO Sonic the Hedgehog pieces

A number of new pieces can already be spotted in the LEGO Sonic the Hedgehog sets, primarily when it comes to the model’s characters. Both Tails and Amy feature dual-moulded legs and unique head pieces for their first appearance. Likewise, Dr. Eggman’s head and torso make their debut in 76994 Green Hill Zone Loop Challenge, compared to the brick-built version of the villain in 21331 Sonic the Hedgehog – Green Hill Zone.

The giant loop in 76994 Green Hill Zone Loop Challenge reuses elements from some LEGO City Stuntz sets, while the Moto Bug and Crabmeat Badniks have been recreated using different pieces compared to the ones included with 21331 Sonic the Hedgehog – Green Hill Zone.

LEGO Sonic the Hedgehog models

The four upcoming LEGO Sonic the Hedgehog sets will arrive with a variety of piece counts and prices to match. In terms of overall design, characters and playability, the models appear to tick plenty of boxes, although we’ll have to wait until we have the builds in hand in order to check everything out in person.

At this stage there certainly seems to be enough fun and accessibility for younger fans of the franchise, while older gamers may want to add the LEGO Sonic the Hedgehog sets to their collections if only for the retro value and several unique minifigures.

LEGO Sonic the Hedgehog Easter eggs

There are a number of great Easter eggs to be spotted in the LEGO Sonic the Hedgehog models. The gold ring icon on the power-up box in 76990 Sonic’s Speed Sphere Challenge is different from the pixelated version in 21331 Sonic the Hedgehog – Green Hill Zone, there’s a can of Sonic Cola and a chilli dog in 76990 Sonic’s Speed Sphere Challenge, familiar sunflowers and we’ve even spotted a couple of Chaos Emeralds to collect too.

There’s also a hint in the promotional video for the new models that a fifth LEGO Sonic the Hedgehog build may be on the way at some point, one that could possibly have a set number that would easily slot in between 76992 Amy’s Animal Rescue Island and 76994 Green Hill Zone Loop Challenge…

76990 Sonic’s Speed Sphere Challenge,76991 Tails’ Workshop and Tornado Plane, 76992 Amy’s Animal Rescue Island and 76994 Green Hill Zone Loop Challenge will all be launching on August 1, 2023.
