Super Mario movie teases potential LEGO character cast

The release date and cast for the Super Mario movie has been announced, possibly revealing which characters might star in potential LEGO sets.

Coming from Nintendo and Illumination, and unveiled during the September 2021 Nintendo Direct, the first details for the Super Mario movie have been unveiled. The film, which is scheduled for release in 2022 will feature a star-studded cast of voices as well as the modern actor for the plumber.

Whilst nothing has been confirmed from the LEGO Group for the future movie, with the Super Mario theme possibly scheduled to expand in the next year and the partnership with Nintendo seemingly continuing, a set or two based on the animated project seems entirely possible.

Starring in the Super Mario movie is Chris Pratt as the titular character, Charlie Day as Luigi, Anna Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong, Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek, Sebastian Maniscalco as Spike and Charles Martinet in select cameos.

Whilst a few of those characters may seem familiar and already have brick-built LEGO figures, others like Donkey Kong and Spike have yet to be represented, with the latter not being the newer green enemy but instead Mario’s foreman from the Wrecking Crew game.

Super Mario Bros. will release on December 21 2022 in the US with other regional dates pending. Whether the project will give the LEGO Group the chance to make the first Mario minifigure – and another for Chris Pratt who previously portrayed Jurassic World’s Owen Grady, The LEGO Movie’s Emmet and Marvel’s Star-Lord – is unknown at this time.

Either way, depending on the plumber’s appearance in the film, we might be able to mark off the digital Super Mario controller as the latest brick-built iteration of the actor. The LEGO controller even works with the upcoming 71395 Super Mario 64 Question Mark Block.
