The new LEGO Creator recolours may be limited editions

The product numbers for the recoloured LEGO Creator sets – including 77941 Mighty Dinosaurs and 77942 Fiat 500 – suggest that they may be limited edition or exclusive products.

While the number sequencing for the two recolours (revealed in safety documents and confirmed by LEGO.com’s building instructions portal) doesn’t match other re-released sets, including 92176 NASA Apollo Saturn V and 92177 Ship in a Bottle, it does follow a pattern for another specific type of product: San Diego Comic-Con exclusives.

2019’s in-person convention brought us three products at the beginning of the ‘779…’ sequence, including 77901 Sith Trooper Bust, 77902 Captain Marvel and the Asis and 77903 The Dark Knight of Gotham City. Four more then followed in 2020: 77904 Nebulon-B Frigate, 77905 Taskmaster’s Ambush, 77906 Wonder Woman and 77907 Toad’s Special Hideaway.

While last year’s sets ended up on shelves across the US after the pandemic pushed SDCC entirely online, they were originally developed exclusively for sale at the convention, and therefore not for wide release. They were also only available in limited quantities in stores, and didn’t make it to other countries.

That suggests the LEGO Group has reserved product numbers beginning ‘779…’ for sets it intends to produce in smaller numbers than regular sets, and could subsequently point to the recoloured LEGO Creator sets being available in similarly limited quantities.

We’ll know more once the LEGO Group officially reveals 77941 Mighty Dinosaurs and 77942 Fiat 500 (along with the heretofore-unseen 77940 Mighty Dinosaurs, which may be a third variant of 2017’s 31058 Mighty Dinosaurs), and fills in the gaps around these mysterious new releases.

For now, click here for our thoughts on whether the company will sell the new variants alongside their original versions.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
