LEGO Batman director reveals plot for cancelled sequel film

While LEGO Batman 2 will never see the light of day, we do now know more details about the sequel we were so close to getting.

The LEGO Batman Movie director, Chris McKay, is currently speaking to press about Universal Pictures’ Renfield and answered a few side questions about the now-cancelled The LEGO Batman Movie 2. He confirmed that the team already had a script for the movie and gave some pointers on what the sequel would have been about.

“We had a really fun script with Dan Harmon and Michael Waldron,” McKay told Uproxx. “The sequel would’ve been a quasi Superfriends movie and the structure was going to be a sort of Godfather II kind of thing with Batman and the Justice League facing a modern-day problem, Lex Luthor and OMAC, while at the same time flashing back to the reasons why Batman and the Justice League – and in particular, Superman – have bad blood.”

We also know that McKay had some huge crossovers planned. While the director didn’t confirm what exactly he had planned, we could imagine some sort of DC-Marvel crossover that’s never been seen before in modern cinema. All that McKay would confirm to Uproxx was that it would certainly expand the LEGO DC appearances.

“It was going to explore Superman and Batman’s relationship in a very different way than you’ve ever seen it portrayed, including Superman’s alienation from humanity and how hard it is to truly be friends, real friends, for years,” explained McKay.

As of July 2021, McKay was reported to be working on other LEGO movies – but no such films have surfaced yet. With all of the shake-ups at Warner Bros. recently, along with a believed move away from animation, it could be that these titles have died the same death as LEGO Batman 2.
